How to Cook with Medical Marijuana

Edible preparations of medical marijuana, also known as medibles, are beloved of many patients. There are tons of recipes for special brownies, space cake, cannabutter and honey oil, but also more elaborate and gourmand dishes like cannabis pesto, marijuana margaritas or pot pasta. You can make THC-laced candy, cookies, bread, ice cream... just about anything you can think of!

Edible medical marijuana

Ingesting medical marijuana has the important benefit of being completely healthy. This in contrast to smoking marijuana with or without tobacco, which many MMJ patients are unwilling to do because of tar, nicotine and other harmful substances inhaled. A possible downside of edible marijuana is that it can be harder to get the dose right. Also, it takes a while for the effect to kick in. But with some experience, you will find your way to make edible marijuana a pleasant and easy way to take your medicine.

Other Oral Applications of Medical Marijuana

Besides baked goods and other medible products, there are other ways of ingesting medical marijuana. You can make a tea, a tincture, an alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage and even marijuana pills. Honey or hash oil is another specific preparation. You can read more about honey oil elsewhere on this site. Caution is advisable when using alcohol-based preparations. The combination of alcohol and marijuana is potent and not necessarily the best medicinal preparation. Cookies or cake are probably the best entry-level form of medical MMJ: they are easy to make, taste good and you can vary the dosage by starting with a small bite and working your way up.

Medical Marijuana Recipes and Tutorials

Medical marijuana in edible form is a wonderful medicine. It avoids the risks associated with inhaling smoke/burnt plant matter. The best known marijuana recipe is probably cannabutter. Other possibilities include marijuana tincture, cannabis oil and hash oil. There are two things to keep in mind regarding edible marijuana.

  1. The active ingredients of cannabis (cannabinoids) dissolve in alcohol and fats, but not in water. That means you cannot toss a bunch of marijuana leaves in water to brew a tea, for example. First, you must suspend the cannabinoids in fat or alcohol.
  2. It is generally agreed that cannabis must be activated by heat. Eating it raw will not deliver the full therapeutic effects and benefits. However many people do eat raw marijuana and report they benefit from doing so.

Because you're using marijuana as medicine, it is important to know what you're doing. It's one thing if a normal batch of cookies fails. At most, you will have disappointed kids or neighbours... But when you're cooking with marijuana, the kids don't come into it and you cannot afford to waste any of your medicine! So using decent equipment, good quality marijuana bud or trimmings, and easy to follow, fool-proof recipes are essential.
